First let me state: I have raised, trained, healed, & cared for animals of many species since I was a youth, yet I have never experience the controversy in an animal breed as displayed among Doberman people, breeders, or very uneducated opinionated folks.
In the early years of the Doberman Pinscher an Albino "Sheba" was born & in error registered in the AKC. Past history of the Albino was flagged by breeders as an unwanted gene in the future of the breed due to aggression & serious health issues. After many years the AKC & The Doberman Pinschers Club of America agreed to assign the letter "Z" to any AKC registration number that traced back to Sheba's lineage.
In past registrations by the AKC this did seem a fair solution to breeders to know when the possibility was there for the whelp of an Albino just by it's heritage, but by today's standard it has become a very biased brand to breeders & Dobermans due to genetic testing (developed by the U. of Minn) in which the Doberman may be tested & found positive or negative as a "carrier". If you genetically test your Doberman & it is proven to be a "non-carrier" the AKC or DPCA will NOT remove the "Z".
*Note: If one of the parents is registered as non "Z" & the other is "Z" the entire litter is still assigned a "Z" in its registration.
We at GimmeBlu suggest when buying a "Z" Doberman it is from hands on, knowledgeable, reliable breeders that have healthy stock.
A simple search on the net will result in biased negativity. Many Doberman breeders feel unless a dog is titled it deserves not to be a part of the Doberman breed.
